YAWURU NGAN-GA USAGE/ACTIVITY REQUEST FORM

INFORMATION FOR APPLICANTS

Gala mabu (thank you) for enquiring about Yawuru Ngan-ga (language) and its use. The Yawuru community values and supports the use of Yawuru Ngan-ga and seeks to work with Applicants to ensure that it is used in a suitable cultural context and for an appropriate purpose.

The purpose of the Mabu Yawuru Ngan-ga Centre at Nyamba Buru Yawuru (NBY) is to enhance the long term wellbeing of Yawuru people by:

• Fostering the use of Yawuru Ngan-ga on regular or daily basis within the Yawuru community; and
• Raising the profile and status of the Yawuru community in the town of Broome through increased use of Yawuru Ngan-ga in all Broome schools, the wider Broome community, on signage, in public venues and at public gatherings.

The process of gaining permission to use a Yawuru Ngan-ga word or phrase for public use is by following the steps:

• Complete a Yawuru Ngan-ga Usage/Activity Request Form. You can download a copy from the Yawuru website or pick one up from the NBY Office. On completion, email the form to: language@yawuru.org.au or return it to the NBY Office.
• Following a preliminary assessment by staff from the Mabu Yawuru Ngan-ga Centre, Applicants will be notified of the process, timeframe and costs involved to respond to the request.
• On completion of the request, it will be tabled at a meeting of the Yawuru Language Reference Group, which meets on a bi-monthly basis, for review.
• Subject to the nature of the request, the Yawuru Language Reference Group may refer it to the Yawuru Cultural Heritage Reference Group for advice.
• Once all approvals have been received, the Yawuru Language Reference Group will make a recommendation on the request to the Yawuru Prescribed Body Corporate (PBC) through a Board Paper.
• The recommendation will be tabled at a meeting of the Yawuru PBC, which meets on a quarterly basis. The decision of the Yawuru PBC is final.
• A letter will be forwarded to the Applicant to inform them of the Yawuru PBC’s decision.
• If a Licence Agreement is required, negotiations between NBY and the Applicant will commence once the Yawuru PBC decision has been communicated.

It should be noted that this process may take up to three months.

Applicants should note that there is a minimum fee of $85.00 for Language Requests and subject to the complexity of the request the fee will increase on a per hour basis. On receipt of an Application, staff from the Mabu Yawuru Ngan-ga Centre will conduct a preliminary assessment of the request and subsequently, advise the Applicant of the process, timeframe and costs involved to respond to the request.

Further, a Licence Agreement may apply if the request is being used for commercial or profitable purposes.
